BORDERS

“A boundary indicates a shared limit, a separation between adjacent spaces. It is also a way to peacefully define the property right of each and every one in contended territories. A frontier represents the end of a land. The last border beyond which to venture use to mean to go beyond superstition, against the will of the gods, beyond what is right and permitted and towards the unknowable that may have sparked their envy. To cross a frontier is to move into a territory made of harsh, hard, difficult lands inhabited by dangerous monsters, which need to be fought against. It means getting out of a familiar, known and reassuring space and getting into a space of uncertainty. This passage beyond frontiers also mutates the character of individuals: beyond it, you become a foreigner, an immigrant. Not only different for others, but even for yourself.” Piero Zanini – The meanings of borders.

A film festival can be an area of artistic experimentation, a place of entertainment, a space for aggregation, but also a driving force for the development of ideas and projects beyond the boundaries of art and creativity. Images represent a powerful communication tool that can convey and challenge values and encourage reflections on topics central to our present and future life.

Borders is a competitive selection that stemmed from the collaboration between Lago Film Fest and the Concorto Film FestivalIt was conceived as a time for reflecting through cinematic representation on a recurring idea in the contemporary debate that is often difficult to define: the concept of border. The word “border” is increasingly associated with terms such as conflict, fear, exclusion and foreign. In a world that, over the past

few decades, has been rapidly transformed by the fast wave of globalization, we now seem to be witnessing a sudden change of course: the universalist ideal of a federation of States abolishing the boundaries between them to pursue a set of common interests is being challenged in all areas and regions and questioned by (often inauspicious) claims of identity.
