FOCUS: THE ETHEREAL RAINBOW

An interpretation of modern South African cinema A special program curated by Nolitha Refilwe Mkulisi and Nicholas Nahuel Turchi.

“The Ethereal Rainbow” is a focus on modern South African cinema that ventures into the territory of the unknown, offering a bold and innovative perspective on South African cinematic narratives. It invites viewers to be transported on an exciting and enchanting journey. This approach interprets the country’s cinema through a particularly dreamlike lens, taking viewers into surreal and unknown realms that challenge the invisibility of the contemporary world.

Through the use of extraordinary visual and digital elements, characters suspended in time and space, and narratives that tell of the marginality and poetry of the land, the seven films presented offer a refined and curated interpretation. They range between fiction, documentaries and film in prose, showing what the authors somatise in cinema and their desire to make themselves visible to the world. This is a look at contemporary South African cinema, a cinema that explores the dimensions of the unknown and the unreal.
